Sedan business class Alfa Romeo 164, the release of which began at the plant in Milan in 1987, was designed on the Type Four platform in common with the models Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000. For that time, the "hundred and sixty-fourth" was a progressive machine: it was not bad equipment, many systems of the car were controlled by computers, and buyers of expensive complete sets received electronically controlled suspension. It is noteworthy that in Malaysia and Hong Kong this model was sold as Alfa Romeo 168, due to the fact that the number "164" was considered unhappy.
The basic version of the sedan was equipped with a four-cylinder engine in volume of two liters, which developed 144-148 hp, and in the version with a turbo-supercharging - 175 hp. The more powerful modifications were put by petrol engines V6: three-liter (180-192 hp. ) or a two-liter turbocharged (210 hp). The output of a 2.5-liter turbodiesel was 117-125 hp.
In 1990, the debut version of the Alfa Romeo 164 QV with body kit, sports seats and boosted up to 200 hp. three-liter "six". A couple of years later the all-wheel drive sedan 164 Q4 with the same power unit appeared in the scale, and later its power on the QV and Q4 modifications increased to 232 hp.
All in all, until 1998, 273,000 Alfa Romeo 164 cars were produced. It was this model that became the last "Alpha" sold on the American market - the Italian company left the US in 1995.
