The Audi A8 is a large four-door sedan of the luxury class (representative class), produced by the concern Audi. In 1994, he replaced the Audi V8 and since its inception, it is considered to be the "flagship model" of Audi.
The production of cars of the executive class under the brand Audi began in 1979. The first of these was the Audi 200 (Typ 43), based on the Audi 100 C2 platform. In 1983, as the luxury version of the new Audi 100 C3, Audi 200 Typ 44 was released. In 1988, the Audi V8 became the first independent model of the executive class. Nevertheless, he, despite the new design from a technical point of view, was based on the Audi 100 platform. There are a number of design features that have resulted, in particular, in the lack of space and comfort. The first three models attracted attention, first and foremost, thanks to the quattro full drive.
Audi's first representative sedan, named after A8, was released in 1994. The body of the car was based on the D2 platform and the aluminum monocoque Audi Space Frame. The A8 body, also the first time in its class, was completely made of aluminum. Thanks to the four-door Audi weighed fewer models of such constant competitors in this class size as the Mercedes-Benz S and the BMW 7. The A8 was completed with four gasoline - V6 2.8 (193 hp), V8 3.7 (232), V8 4.2 (300) and W12 6.0 (450), as well as two turbodiesel engines - V6 2.5 TDI (180) and V8 3.3 TDI (225). Three transmissions were offered: five-speed manual, and four-speed automatic. Model A8 D2 has a permanent full drive on all wheels. Basic interior interior equipment: six airbags, two-zone climate control, Bose audio system, leather interior and wood processing.
