Jeep is a division of the large American concern Chrysler, which specializes in the production of off-road cars. From the very beginning of the history of the famous American brand, the engineers and designers of the company tried to ensure that the technical characteristics of cars always met the needs of their owners. Thanks to this powerful, reliable and able to move in almost any conditions, SUVs of the brand receive enthusiastic reviews of car owners not only in the US, but all over the world.
The history of the brand is connected with the name of the talented American engineer Arthur Herrington, who after the First World War, in partnership with the company Marmon Motors, started developing off-road cars. The result of his experiments was a car, which was called a "jeep" from the English abbreviation GP, which means general purpose, i.e. General purpose.
The appearance of the first "jeeps" refers to the mid-30-ies of the last century. It was during this period that the US military department needed a new model of the car for use in the army. The American military leadership decided to hold a contest for the best car, capable of passing on any off-road. In the competition, as a result, participated 3 automakers: American Bantam Company, Ford Motors and Willis-Overland, which was founded by Gene Willis. The most successful model was introduced by American Bantam. And already on the basis of its development by the decree of the US government, its models were presented by larger enterprises - Willys Overland and Ford.
In November 1940, the tests of the proposed models began. As a result, both manufacturers received an order of 1500 cars. Deliveries of new products started already in 1941. And six months later, the US armed forces decided to choose one of the manufacturers, which became the company Willys and its model MA.
In 1942, the MA model was modernized and renamed MB. The car was equipped with a Willys 77 engine and a three-speed transmission. The maximum speed of the model was 105 km / h. In total, at that time, 360,000 copies were produced, the bulk of which was directed to the Red Army.
Thanks to the army jeep model, Willys Overland has become famous all over the world. In the postwar period, the company was engaged in the creation of cars, which did not differ much from the jeep, created for the American army. They were considered civilians only because they had a different shade of the body, not characteristic of the military color of "khaki". The civilian jeep received the index CJ - Civilian Jeep.
Officially, the Jeep trademark was registered in 1950. Just at that time, the popularity of Willys products began to gradually decline. As a result, in 1953, Willys became a member of Kaiser. Over the next 10 years, the name of the company was John Willys, and in 1963 the company became known as the Kraiser-Jeep Corporation and in 1970 was incorporated into the American Motors Corporation (AMC), which in turn continued the production of the legendary "Jeeps".
As part of the concern AMC, the Jeep Corporation was formed. Since 1972, the manufacturer began to equip its cars with fully automatic transmission with a permanent all-wheel drive. One of the first models, which received such functionality, was released in 1973 Wagoneer. In 1974, debuted the sporty two-door Cherokee, and in 1976, the release of the updated CJ-7, which was equipped with a removable plastic roof, as well as an open-top pickup truck - CJ-8 Scrambler. In 1978, the limited edition Wagoneer was launched - a Limited modification with leather interior, radio and chromium mass.
In 1986, the premiere of a cross-country vehicle Wrangler, which instantly becomes a hit of sales. The car offered the traditional advantages of the Jeep family - endurance and unsurpassed ability to ride off-road.
In 1987, the concern AMC, and, consequently, the brand, became the property of Chrysler Corporation. In 1992, at the auto show in Detroit started a new line of mid-size SUVs Grand Cherokee, which replaced the morally outdated model Wagonner. At that time, the Grand Cherokee was the best car in its class, and its success was terrific.
In 1996, the sixth generation of Wrangler was launched. The car combined a refined design, excellent patency, softness of course and, of course, safety. Thanks to these features, the car has set new standards of quality in the automotive industry.
In 1998, Daimler-Benz and Chrysler announced their merger into a single company called Daimler-Chrysler, which enabled them to cover all segments of the world market. Also this year the new generation of the Grand Cherokee was introduced, which once again took the place of the leader in its segment.
In 2006, the SUV Commander, created on the Grand Cherokee platform and having seven seats, appears. The car was equipped with a Quadra-Drive II transmission, which allowed the transmission of torque automatically to the front or rear axle of the car.
In 2007, Russia created the company CJSC Chrysler RUS, which becomes the general supplier of brands Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge.
All Jeep models that are created today, one way or another are followers of the first brand cars. Every year, the company's engineers add to their models more and more useful new features that serve to improve the comfort of the car. Especially popular in the Jeep range are the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Compass models.
