Citroen CX first appeared in front of the public at the 1974 Paris Motor Show. Then, two models were presented to the public: the CX 2000 with a 1985 cc engine and a CX 2200 engine with a displacement of 2175 cm³. New products were appreciated, as a result, the serial release of CX begins. Initially, the models were proposed: CX 2000 Berline, CX 2000 Economique Berline, equipped with gearbox with more "long" gears and CX 2200 Berline Club.
Even today the CX body looks modern, both visually and constructively: a transversely located engine, front drive wheels, an independent hydropneumatic suspension of all wheels, a long base, a wide track, a 6-window body. The Citroen CX differs from other cars in the upper middle class, the wonderful comfort of the wheel suspension and a good spacious interior. Like other cars with a long base and wide gauge, the Citroen CX has excellent longitudinal and lateral stability. In addition, like other front-wheel drive cars, it is insensitive to the side wind.
In the inheritance from the predecessor SM received the steering system Varipower (which later became known as Diravi).
Already in 1975 CX received the title "Car of the Year".
In 1976, a number of options for the model CX 2200 replenished with a semi-automatic 3-speed box (C matic). A new diesel engine - CX 2200 Diesel - was added to the range of powertrains.
In the same year, the light saw the model CX 2400 Prestige - with an extended base and a taller body. Universal Estate Estate was manufactured in two trim levels: Comfort and Super. Engines for it were offered three: petrol 2000, 2200 or diesel 2,2 D liters. Citroen positioned it as a family car of increased capacity.
In 1977 there was an injector (M23, L-Jetronic) 2.4-liter engine, which is installed on the CX Berline Gti. The CX2200 is replaced by the CX 2400. A year later, the M23 engine is also being installed on the Pallas and Prestige models.
In 1979, the first CX 2500 Diesel with atmospheric diesel capacity of 2.5 liters. At the same time, the CX 2000 is replaced with the Reflex and Athena models. They install a new gasoline engine with a volume of 1,995 cm³. As an option for these models offer a 5-speed transmission.
For the Pallas and Prestige models, fully automatic automatic boxes are available.
In 1982, they produce the first restyling - all Citroen CX models are equipped with wider front wings - to install a wide rubber, which allows to open the potential of more powerful injector engines. Of sales disappear carburetor CX 2400.
In 1983, renamed the models - Reflex became known as CX 20, Athena - CX 20 TRE, CX 2500 Diesel Reflex became CX 25 D, and CX 2400 Injection Pallas - CX Pallas IE.
In 1984, a 2.5 liter turbo diesel was installed on the CX 25 D, and the model itself was called the CX 25 RD Turbo or TRD Turbo (DTR in English-speaking countries), the old 2400 cc engines were replaced with 2.5 liter. Break is replaced by CX Evasion.
In 1985, the production received three new versions: CX 25 RI, CX 25 GTi Turbo and CX 25 Turbo Prestige. In the same year, Citroen showed experimental models with the ABS system.
In 1986, the second restyled CX was produced, in contrast to the first, he touched both the exterior and the interior of the produced models. There were plastic bumpers and a new instrument panel, which retained the architecture of the old model, but at the same time looked modern. The interior is made quite stylish, in dark colors with aluminum inserts. The seats feature excellent lateral support, have adjustments (forwards and backwards, up and down). In 1989, Citroen introduced its new car series XM. CX starts to be produced less and less, in the end, in January 1991, their release ends altogether.
