Citroën DS History
The idea of a car was born in 1938, when the head of Citroen Pierre Boulanger created the concept of VGD (Voiture de Grande Diffusion - a mass production car). The design and construction of the future car, which lasted about ten years, was interrupted twice - during the war and after Pierre Boulanger's death. The presentation of the car took place in April 1955 at the Paris Motor Show, where its futuristic design caused a real shock. In the first hour of the exhibition, about 800 orders were received on the car, on the first day - about 12,000, and on the first week - about 80,000. DS received world-wide popularity due to the assassination of President De Gaulle in 1962: despite the large number of shots, the car did not descended from the road and was able to escape the bombardment.
The design of the car was revolutionary and unusual for its time. DS was the creation of the legendary designer Flaminio Burtoni. The two-body body DS had a very low landing, a huge glazing area, a large forward and very small rear track, a smooth, flowing tail that covered the wheels. The speed of the whole car was emphasized by the subtle, elegant roof racks, characteristic aerodynamics of the body and a successful combination of straight and curved lines. In the interior, attention was first attracted by an unusual single-spoke steering wheel.
